Morning Roundup: March 9
For Tuesday, suspicious white powder found to be 98 percent safe, the former Danville Public Library director’s charge is dismissed, and a Martinsville man is sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison for drug and firearm charges.
HAZ-MAT: Danville Fire Chief David Eagle said that the white powder taken to the police department Monday was nothing of concern. Eagle said that the Danville Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials team tested the powder Monday and found a 98 percent chance that the powder wasn’t dangerous. The Virginia State Police also took a sample for testing in a Richmond lab. Eagle said identification could take a while. See Monday’s brief here.
LIBRARY DIRECTOR: A Danville General District Court judge found the former Danville Public Library director not guilty* Monday. Judge Lee Stilwell Jr. said the testimony of the director and the complainant was credible, but there was not enough evidence to determine if the director, Otis Douglas Alexander, was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. See the story here.
FEDERAL DRUG CASE: A Martinsville man was sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison Monday for drug distribution and firearm charges. A Danville federal jury found Carlos Santana Morris guilty of six counts in December. See more here.
*A previous version on this post said that the judge dismissed the assault charge.

Alexander’s charge was not dismissed. He was found “Not Guilty”.
There’s a big difference.
