You really can write about the weather every day
I once worked with an editor here at the Danville Register & Bee who argued that the newspaper could write a weather story every day. He was right about that, of course. Just look at The Weather Channel.
Normally, though, the weather isn’t a story for us. On most days, the weather is covered by the half-page collection of maps and charts in the back of the A section.
But this hasn’t been a typical winter — snow before Christmas, multiple storms in the same week and snow and ice knocking out electric power to some communities.
In the most recent storm, the Dan River Region didn’t get the heavy snow seen north of here, but downed power lines forced many Pittsylvania County residents to leave their homes over the weekend.
It takes a tree falling onto power lines to remind people who don’t have emergency generators just how much they depend on electricity. The story developed slowly as people left their homes to stay with friends and family members — or at local hotels and motels.
On Tuesday, more potentially dangerous winter weather is expected to hit the Dan River Region. We’re not sure what to expect, but we have the ability to get stories out by e-mail, cell phone text messages, our Web site and the newspaper. No matter what hits the ground, we should be able to get the word out.
