When Bill and Tom stop by for a visit

What do Bill Bolling and Tom Perriello have in common?

Both are elected public officials representing the Dan River Region. Bolling is entering his second term as Virginia’s lieutenant governor. Perriello is entering his second year as the 5th District congressman.

While Bolling is a Republican and Perriello is a Democrat, they both share another important similarity: They regularly visit the Dan River Region.

Bolling’s visits are part of Gov. Bob McDonnell’s laser-like focus on job creation in rural Virginia. During the campaign, McDonnell promised this community that either he or his lieutenant governor would come here at least once a month.

Perriello’s visits have covered a wider range of issues — health care reform, veterans and green energy — but he regularly visits the Dan River Region to discuss jobs and the economy.

This week with Congress in recess, Perriello spent four days in the Dan River Region. Most of his Southside events — nine out of 21 — dealt with the recently passed health care reform bill. We covered Perriello’s local events on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

When an public office holder comes to Danville, it’s always a story for this newspaper. The public has a right to know what their elected representatives are doing and saying when they’re in town.

This week, Perriello was here for four days in a row. We covered every event. When Bolling and McDonnell return, we’ll cover them, too. Cover the news — that’s what we do here.
