“We’re getting a Taco Bell!”

The date was Oct. 22, 1990. Riverside Drive traffic was backed up because Danville’s first Taco Bell restaurant had just opened. It was a surreal scene because it was … a Taco Bell.

That caused a traffic jam?

It sure did.

The same thing happens every time a new store or restaurant opens in Danville. That new Taco Bell wasn’t Danville’s only Mexican restaurant. Back in 1990, we had Casa Perez and Cuco’s. Rather, it was the lure of a new national chain restaurant that had them (literally) lined up outside the door.

That was then, and this is now: A complete renovation, inside and out, of Danville’s first Taco Bell. It was news, for several reasons, the least of which is the project represents a long-term commitment to this community.

“We believe in Danville and we’re willing to commit for another 20 years,” said Tim Reith, president of Martinsville-based Tacoma Inc., the Taco Bell Corp. franchisee that operates Danville’s two Taco Bells. The renovation is also using local contractors, and as a bonus, no local restaurant employees have lost their jobs.

Tara Bozick’s story will appear on Thursday’s Region page.
