Two readers, two news tips, two stories
The stories, “Grassroots group eyes reform” (April 4, page A4) and “Road to recovery” (April 6, page A1) share one thing in common — we got the idea to do them from our readers.
“Grassroots group eyes reform” is about the Virginia Organizing Project, and was suggested to me about a month ago by a reader who wanted to know where the group got its money. That reader wrote on a Web site comment that he wanted a reporter to, “… investigate exactly where VOP gets it’s funding. Follow the money here and then publish the truth in the Register no matter what the truth is.” The story in Sunday’s paper by Catherine Amos answered that question: The liberal advocacy group gets nearly all of its money — 98 percent — from foundations and private donations.
“Road to recovery” came in from a call I received. We frequently write about veterans, and although Charles Duke isn’t from Danville, his buddy Eric Greene lives and works here. The story was important because it highlights the sacrifices Charles Duke made on our behalf. Those stories need to be told, and we’re glad to be telling them.
We’re fortunate to have readers who will point us to the local stories that need to be told. While this newspaper has a Facebook page and the reporters send out Tweets, some of the old ways — like the telephone news tip — will always be appreciated. You can call us anytime at 791-7971.
