The old ways are still the best

Who needs the Internet, e-mail or even accounts with Twitter and Facebook when you can cut something out of the newspaper, highlight the parts you disagree with, spice things up with your own views and then mail it all in to yours truly?

Recently, a reader sent me a copy of our editorial, “Supervisors defied the voters’ intent,” (Jan. 25, page A6), which contained these offending paragraphs:

“Just consider how tough it has been to get the Board of Supervisors to raise the property tax rate to pay for the high school renovation bonds.
“The people of Pittsylvania County voted for that, but it’s been a fight to get the board to raise taxes for those projects. We’re not talking about new government spending, we’re talking about questions on the 2007 ballot that won by a margin of 10,120-5,756.
“Ingram’s right about Harville and Barber voting “against the will of the people” this week, but they’re not the only ones who have done that.”

That led, “A tired of being taxed taxpayer” to write: “The problem with this editorial is that you and the liberal media are always for raising taxes. This Bond for schools was voted in by “All” the voters in the county, including many that own no property but the bond must be paid for by the property owner’s only. This is not right. Everyone should have the privilege of paying. The way it is now, a few pay for everyone. Only the property owners should vote on anything that only they pay for. Too many get a free ride in this country.”

To which I say, when the school bond was before the voters in 2007, they were told that property taxes would be used to pay the money back. What’s the point of even having elections if some folks don’t like the results once the ballots are counted?

Ransom notes just aren’t the same without cut-out letters from the newspaper…
