I didn’t find it all that odd, but that’s just me

It was a warm, lazy Friday night when I found it necessary to answer “news_u_can_use,” an anonymous website commenter who wondered about a two-paragraph item on http://www.GoDanRiver.com.

Here’s what he — or she — was curious about: “Does anybody else find it odd that anytime American National sends out a new release the Register puts it in a prominent place. Any and all other local banks never get a mention when they show a profit, or pay a dividend?”

That’s actually a good question.

Here’s my response: “There’s nothing odd about it. American National Bank sends out news releases on a regular basis. The other local banks do not. If they did, we would print them ‘when they show a profit, or pay a dividend.’”

And that’s really the answer.

American National will send us financial reports, quarterly updates and personnel changes. Since they’re a local business, their news is local news — which is exactly what we cover here.

The bottom line is we’re not mind readers, and like every other news-gathering organization on the planet, we rely on submissions and news tips. If other banks, or schools, or volunteer fire departments or any other type of club, company or group wants to send us information, we’ll be happy to find a place for it in the newspaper and on the website.
