Goodbye, Schoolfield Lunch

As the editor of the Danville Register & Bee, I’m directly responsible for the stories that appear in the newspaper and on our Web site.

But that never stopped Bill Kirios from yelling at me if the yellow Register & Bee box outside his iconic West Main Street diner wasn’t filled by the carrier.

Bill had a habit of leaving his home-delivered newspaper for his wife and buying one out of the rack to read while working at his restaurant. If the box didn’t have any newspapers in it, he would let me know about it.

At Schoolfield Lunch, even if people didn’t know you, they were willing to strike up a conversation. You sat facing the other diners at one of three U-shaped counters. Conversations among friends, relatives and co-workers were shared, along with bottles of ketchup and hot sauce. It was a great chance to meet new people while having an affordable, tasty and fast meal.

I don’t get that kind of dining experience at most other restaurants in town. Today, we’re all seated at cubicles that seem to prevent the kind of social interaction common at the old places like Schoolfield Lunch.

When I’m out in public, I like to hear from readers who have questions, comments and concerns about the newspaper. With the loss of Schoolfield Lunch, it looks like I’ll have one less place.
