Clyde — Here’s your “shout-out” from the Danville Register & Bee
So, there I was in Walmart Sunday afternoon, plucking a bottle of kid’s shampoo off the shelf when Clyde introduced himself. Clyde said he thought he knew me from television, and he wanted a shout-out the next time I was on the air.
Which will happen … never. But I did tell Clyde about our Web site and this blog. I told him I would give him a shout-out from here.
That brief encounter with a stranger reminded me of how many different people I’ve met since first moving to Danville in 1986. I often find myself talking to people who know me — or seem to know me — and I can’t place their name or their face or remember how I know them.
That serves as a reminder that while I may speak to new people every day in person, on the telephone or through e-mails and Tweets, I’m probably the only person in the news media that they will have contact with that day. That’s why it’s important to get those conversations right, whether it’s getting their letter into the newspaper or returning a telephone call promptly or making sure that a caller doesn’t get lost in our voicemail system.
For all the high-tech tools I have at my disposal, the old fashioned person-to-person contacts still mean the most. Even if my newest reader, Clyde, thinks I look like somebody he saw on TV.
