Black and white and read all over
A reader called in Wednesday morning to complain about the neon-yellow sticker on page A1 of the Danville Register & Bee. She called the sticker “tacky.”
“They don’t need to be on the paper,” she said of the advertisement.
The advertising sticker covered part of the story, “Danville man joins 5th race,” but I don’t think my angry caller was related to congressional candidate Jeffrey Clark. Instead, she just didn’t want the sticker affixed to the front of the newspaper.
I’m content to peel those stickers off — along with a little bit of that lovely black ink — and move on. That’s because what we call our “print product” — the Danville Register & Bee — is supported through paid advertising. The cost of a subscription helps to pay for the newspaper’s distribution.
Advertising revenue helps to pay for kind of newsgathering like the story about Clark’s candidacy. Without it, how could we afford to put five reporters on the street every week gathering the local news … that might wind up on page A1, covered by a neon-yellow sticker?
