A nasty end to a nasty week
I’ve been handling letters from Danville Register & Bee readers since 1997. Over the years, I’ve learned to spot new letters from Opinion page regulars by their length, style, tone, typography and politics.
So, when I saw an e-mail Friday from one of our more conservative writers, I figured he wanted to comment on the week’s ongoing partisan viciousness.
But I was wrong. He didn’t want to weigh in on the smoldering fires of political intolerance. Instead, he wanted to let me know he was another one of its victims:
“Robert,
I guess I struck a nerve with someone with my letter … A message was left on my answering machine … that said (pardon the language), ‘What do you know about honor and integrity you inbred piece of s—-.’ The ID showed no name and no number.
You may be assured that I will continue voicing my opinion despite cowardly phone calls.”
And you may be assured that the Danville Register & Bee and http://www.GoDanRiver.com will continue to publish valid letters to the editor from local readers — like this man — about the issues and events that matter to them.
I’m glad this incident has only strengthened this particular writer’s desire to speak his mind. I invite more of you to do the same.
